Amber “Tears of the Tree” Ancient Natural Element for Handmade Jewelry

August 01, 2017

If one wants to tune in to nature, into the beginnings of time, there is no better way to do so than to touch a piece of amber!  Deposits of amber have been discovered that range from 360 millions years ago and belong between the Carboniferous and Pleistocene geological periods.  Syrupy resin oozed from ancient pine trees encasing small insects, plant material, feathers and other small objects, as it flowed down the trunk of the tree.  Over time, the resin was encased in dirt and debris and, through a process of heat and pressure, fossilized to become amber.  Many refer to amber as “Tears of the Tree.”

Amber ranges in color from very dark brown to almost a clear, lemony color.  Most of the amber that is used in jewelry designs comes from the Baltic Sea region or, the Dominican Republic.

Because of the light weight of the material, amber is the perfect choice for partnering with other gemstones and natural stones or, with sterling silver or pearls as its coloring blends beautifully and it does not add much weight to the design.

Because of its ancient character, amber is thought to have many healing properties.  They include: love, strength, good luck, healing, and protection.  Amber is thought to bring humor and joy to one’s life and to strengthen the physical body.  From a fashion perspective, amber brings light and beauty, provides wonderful contrast for other natural elements and offers unique jewelry design possibilities.

This week, we are celebrating the wondrous beauty of amber with a 50% off sale on all amber designs, for one week, using the discount code ANCIENTAMBER
