EarthWhorls Celebrates the Myth & Mystery of Amethyst

December 13, 2016

From a scientific point of view, amethysts are created when a layer of forming rock cools down very slowly.  Air bubbles appear and minerals often occur in the empty spaces.  This “filled-up” space is called a geode.  And happily, geodes are filled with amethyst.  And surprisingly, if the crystal that has formed, is contaminated with iron, it turns beautifully, passionately purple!

But amethysts are so much more than science.  They are beauty, myth, magic, and rich with the history of ancient lore!

The name “Amethyst” derives from the Greek word “ametusthos, meaning “not intoxicated.” One of the stories told about how amethyst came to be, explains that, the wine God Bacchus was angry and seeking revenge.  He determined that the first person he encountered would be fed to his tigers.  By chance, that first person was a beautiful young lady named Amethyst who was on her way to worship at the altar of Diana.  “As the ferocious beasts sprang, she sought the protection of the goddess and was saved by being turned into a clear, white crystal. Bacchus, regretting his cruelty, poured the juice of his grapes over the stone as an offering, giving the gem its lovely purple hue.”  https://www.crystalvaults.com/crystal-encyclopedia/amethyst

From that day forth, it was believed that the special virtue of amethyst was to prevent drunkenness.

Amethyst is also believed to be a connection to the divine, repel evil thoughts, grant greater wisdom and understanding and, offer comfort to those who are grieving.

Amethyst is the traditional birthstone for the month of February and February, as we all know, is the month of love, Valentine’s Day! (February 19th to March 20th)

But, if you are a lover of nature and passionate about fashion, you know that amethyst is also one of the most beautiful stones of all.  The intensity of its color, the light that shines from within, the way it blends into jewelry designs, embracing other stones and sterling silver or gold, make it one of the most joyful stones of all, to create jewelry with.  And I have indulged my love of amethyst by creating many EarthWhorls designs highlighting its amazing beauty.
