EarthWhorls Reveals Fun Facts about Jewelry

by Susan A. Katz January 24, 2017

I know what it is I love about jewelry and, I bet you do too!  I love the way it connects me to nature.  I love the way jewelry allows me to make a statement about who I am and how I feel and, how I want others to see me.  I love how jewelry enhances my sense of fashion and fun.

And when I love something, I enjoy finding out all I can about it and so I’ve done some homework over the years and thought I’d share, with you, some fun, random facts I’ve discovered about jewelry…

~ Styles in jewelry changed with each new civilization and became the symbol of people’s ideals of beauty and fashion.

~ Only one out of every million diamonds that are mined ends up being used in jewelry designs.  The rest end up being used in industry and manufacturing.

~ Silver has been used in jewelry making for over 6000 years.

~ The largest diamond that was ever found “The Cullinan” weighs in at over 1 and 1/3 pounds!

~ The oldest piece of jewelry ever found, dates back over 100,000 years and consisted of beads made from Nassarius shells.

~ The word “jewellery” (the way everyone spells it outside of the US) comes from the French word joule, which comes from the latin word jocale, which means “plaything.”

And finally, a quote that perhaps sums up why we ladies love jewelry so much and why we are hoping to find a beautifully wrapped gift waiting for us on Valentine’s Day (with a design inside)…  “I love jewelry because, no matter how much weight I gain or lose, it always fits.” – Ellen Pleasants

Something beautiful is always waiting for you, at EarthWhorls.
