In ancient Egypt, it was believed that pearls were tears of joy shed by the Goddess Aphrodite. They also believed that pearls had special healing powers and generated a positive and life- giving energy.
The Egyptians were not the only ones, in ancient times, who believed that there was something magical about pearls. Julius Caesar limited the wearing of pearls to royalty, believing the Gods would be offended if just mere mortals wore them.
Native Americans also revered pearls and Arab legend says, that pearls were dewdrops filled with moonlight that fell into the ocean and were swallowed by oysters.
In a more modern context, my mother and grandmother believed that no lady was ever fully dressed, for a special occasion, without a string of pearls or a pearl bracelet or pair of earrings. Pearls, in my family, were worn as part of the everyday fashion statement but, those special pearls came out for the holidays, for weddings and birthdays and anniversaries. Each strand had a story reflecting the memory it had created and happily, created new memories.
As a jewelry designer, I adore working with pearls. There is something “alive” about them, as though they impart a special, fluid energy and almost always, they bring with them a sense of wonder.
